Getting hot and sweaty in Prague

Another hot one today at 34C and no end to the heatwave in sight.

We slept in this morning, not waking up until 8.30am. In Berlin the curtains barely covered the windows and the bright sunshine was waking me at 5am. The lovely thick curtains at this hotel in Prague allowed us to catch up on some sleep.

It was around 11am when we left the hotel and it was already near 34C. First we went to the train station to get tickets for our next destination on Monday. Then we walked towards the National Museum, along Wenceslas Square, to the National Theatre and walked along the river from the Legion Bridge to Charles Bridge. Along the river we stopped to watch some people get in the zorb balls.

We walked through the Jewish area and stopped to have lunch near the hotel. I was extremely hot and needed to go back to the hotel. Jean enjoys the heat but I don’t cope well with hot weather and three and a half hours of walking in the heat was all I could take. Jean went out for another walk while I recovered in the air conditioning.

In the evening we walked along the river, watching the tour boats going by: one party boat with very loud music. We walked over the crowded Charles Bridge and then returned across the bridge. After wandering through the Old Town Square we started looking for a restaurant and eventually found one for a very late 10pm dinner.

Today’s Fitbit readings: 26,043 steps and 17.63kms.

Sunday 5 July 2015

We set the alarm for 7am today to avoid sleeping in like yesterday. Expecting a high of 36C today, we decided we’d better get an early start to walk up the hill to Prague Castle.

We left the hotel at 9am and it was already very warm as we walked across the Manesuv Bridge and started walking uphill, coming to lots of stairs for the final climb up to the castle. We spent nearly six hours exploring the palaces, churches, squares and side streets of the castle grounds. There was a lot to see and we gave it a pretty good go in the 35C heat. The temperature eased slightly and a breeze came up – it looked like a storm was coming but it didn’t eventuate.

Back down the hill we made our way to the very ornate St Nicholaus Church, where we stopped to say our prayers (we sat for a rest). Jean walked up the stairs of the church Bell Tower while I crossed the Charles Bridge to the Old Town Square to go up the clock tower – I cheated and took the lift to the top. Jean found me in the square and we stopped for a drink before heading back to the hotel, arriving around 6.30pm – a long, hot and sweaty day!

Today’s Fitbit readings: 23,334 steps,15.8kms and 32 flights of stairs.
